A Tao friend asked: is it necessary to store Pu’er tea in purple pottery pots?
I don’t think we should use the word “necessary”, which means that we have to. But in reality, many tea leaves, including many Pu’er teas, are not stored in purple pottery pots.
In other words, I think it is more realistic: for the storage of Pu’er tea, purple pottery pot is not necessary, but it is a better choice.
Why do you say that? As long as you know what Pu’er tea can do, you will know what you are afraid of.
What is Pu’er tea afraid of?
I’m afraid it’s completely sealed. If Pu’er tea is completely enclosed in a small space, it can’t exchange air with the outside world properly, and can’t form a suitable hot and humid environment for microorganism and enzyme activities. The natural fermentation can’t be carried out normally, and the quality of tea will not change essentially.
Second, they are afraid of excessive ventilation. Pu’er tea has been stored in an open space for a long time. If the ventilation is excessive, the tea flavor will gradually disappear.
I’m afraid it’s too wet. Although Pu’er tea needs certain hot and humid conditions to support the post fermentation process, there is also a limit. If it’s too wet, the tea will go mouldy before fermentation.
Four afraid of pungent smell. Most of the tea is adsorbable, so is Pu’er tea. If there is a long-term odor in the tea storage environment, the stored Pu’er tea will also have an odor.
What can purple pots do? All of these are due to the clay properties of purple pottery and the structural characteristics of green body.
Purple pottery clay belongs to mud rather than sand, with high mesh number and fine as paste grease. After being made into pottery, the green body has certain air permeability, which can exchange air slowly with the outside world; because the clay is fine, and there is no excessive ventilation, a large amount of tea gas will be lost.
At the same time, the special green body structure makes a relatively independent and stable small environment inside the purple pottery pot. The temperature and humidity will not fluctuate violently due to the change of external environment, so it has good continuity and stability. It can not only support the slow post fermentation, but also avoid mildew caused by moisture transition.
The internal environment is stable, only with the external slow air exchange, so it can also play a better role in the isolation of the odor, not to a large number of adsorption.
The above is from some of the basic characteristics of purple pottery, there is no particularly accurate experimental data. But in daily use, Taoyou must have some experience of these characteristics of purple pottery, which is similar to common sense of life. Therefore, I say that purple pottery pot is a better choice for Pu’er tea, and it is a common sense suggestion for Taoyou.
Of course, if some institutions can get more accurate data from the experiment, I believe it will help you to make a better choice.
