In recent years, there has been a bright red color work in purple pottery of Jianshui, which is known as “Chinese red”.

Many unknown Taoyou saw such works for the first time and thought it was the red clay works in purple sand. But after real contact, we will find that it is different from the red clay and purple sand in two aspects: first, the surface has no grain sense; second, the tentacles are very warm and moist. Such a work is Jianshui purple pottery in the re burning works.

What does “Fushao” mean? As the name suggests, it was burned twice.

For the first time, according to the conventional firing method of Jianshui purple pottery, it was fired in oxidizing atmosphere and polished into a matt effect. At this time, the appearance color was light red or dark red.

Put the polished purple pottery into the kiln again for firing. It should be specially noted that from the first time the purple pottery works are out of the kiln, polished and put into the kiln again, the process should not be stained with any moisture, otherwise it will be easily damaged during the second firing.

After the first firing, the body of purple pottery works is as hard as iron, and extremely brittle. Therefore, in the second kiln firing, with the increase of temperature, the ceramic body expands and shrinks, which makes it more vulnerable. If there is a mistake in any detail, the work will be burnt out.

When some Taoists did not know the situation, they thought that the purpose of burning purple pottery again was to cover up the defects in the first firing, but it was not. In some works, the internal defects may be covered, but the external defects can not be covered no matter how many times they are burned. Moreover, the risk of re burning is high, many works are not cost-effective to cover the defects.

The main reason why some craftsmen choose to re burn and pursue that special red color is the nature of purple pottery itself. The best color can’t be obtained at the same time, so we can only get the second best: the first way is to try to burn well, the second is to try to get the ideal color.

Therefore, the “re burning” in the purple pottery is not mysterious, and there is nothing to hide. It is simply the craftsman’s pursuit and choice of the effect of his works.

What’s more, if you really come into contact with the redried purple pottery, you will find that it is really super warm and moist, and it is also super nourishing.
