Since it has been called Jianshui purple pottery, why is there a white clay pot? I believe that many friends who have just come into contact with Jianshui purple pottery do not understand this term when they hear it.
In fact, at the beginning of the appearance of Jianshui purple pottery, two colors were not juxtaposed in a word to refer to a certain kind of pottery. Whether it is white pottery or pottery of other colors, they are collectively referred to as “Jianshui pottery”, that is, the pottery produced in Jianshui.
How did the term “Jianshui purple pottery” come from? There are two statements:
（1） Jianshui purple pottery is produced in Jianshui, Yunnan Province, and its traditional product is red purple.
（2） Xu Ruhui specially talked about the origin of the word “Purple pottery” in his article “zhengben Qingyuan dialect”. In 1988, she went to Jianshui arts and crafts pottery factory to order gifts. She found that Jianshui pottery was called “purple sand pottery” on the certificate issued by the Ministry of light industry. She felt that the name was not the same as that of Yixing Zisha pottery in Jiangsu Province, so she asked Chen Shaokang, Huang Xiuqiong and Yang Chunxue, the vice factory directors at that time, and learned that the clay used to make Jianshui pottery was “very delicate, with little sand content”. Therefore, she suggested that the word “sand” should be removed and called “Purple pottery”. The word “Jianshui purple pottery” came from this.
Regardless of which of the above two statements is more reliable, in short, we generally call this kind of pottery from Jianshui as “Jianshui purple pottery”.
At the beginning, I believed that “Jianshui purple pottery” was recognized by everyone because its color was mostly reddish purple. Even now, most of Jianshui purple pottery is still dark, and white is a minority.
With the spread of the term, and in the process of the formation of the Convention, “Jianshui purple pottery” is not only the color of the meaning, but gradually has a cultural significance, especially the meaning of the craft.
在《云南省地方标准 · 建水紫陶》里，对于建水紫陶的定义是：以建水境内天然五色土为主要原料，采用镇浆制泥、雕刻填泥、无釉磨光等特殊工艺烧制而成的陶器。
In the local standard of Yunnan Province Jianshui purple pottery, the definition of Jianshui purple pottery is as follows: the pottery is made with the natural five colored soil in Jianshui as the main raw material, and is fired by special techniques such as slurry pressing, clay filling, glabrous polishing, etc.
In other words, the pottery in this definition category, whether white, black, red, bronze, mixed color of ground mud, etc., belongs to Jianshui purple pottery, which can be called “Jianshui purple pottery”.
Therefore, “Jianshui purple pottery white clay pot” is not contradictory. Because the word “Jianshui purple pottery” now not only represents the color, but also means a unique ceramic culture.
