Several times, I have encountered this problem: the decoration on the purple pottery of Jianshui is carved with a knife after drawing, and then it is filled in again. Isn’t there anything to do?
The reason why people ask this question is that if their skills are not perfect and they are not home, the calligraphy and paintings carved out are not as good as the original paintings.
I remember when I went to a purple pottery workshop, the owner showed us some fragments and explained that this was the engraving: “you see, the white mud is embedded in the pottery, not painted on the surface.” On such occasions, we all nodded and praised: “Oh, it turns out that this is the legend of engraving, which is really powerful and interesting.” In fact, I murmured in my heart: “why did you carve and fill in again? How good the painting is! You have so much boring time!”
Later on, I couldn’t help but ask, “how can I have to fill it in again? The painting is actually very good.” The master replied, “the engraving and filling of calligraphy and painting will not wear and tear down for a lifetime; because of the high difficulty, the decoration carved out is often not as good as the original painting, which many people understand.”
I believe that many purple pottery people in the face of this question, the content of the answer is nothing more than these two points. But I don’t think these two points can fully explain why Jianshui purple pottery has to be carved. Is it really easy for the unfilled calligraphy and painting decoration to fall off after being fired at 1100 ℃? Can the slight washing of tea really cause obvious wear and tear on the painting and calligraphy on the pot in a short time? The decoration is not as good as the original painting. Is it necessary to let people understand? ……
For example, the above problems are relatively relative. If we understand the carving and filling of Jianshui purple pottery from another angle, these problems will not exist.
People are used to understanding a thing from the perspective of comparison. They compare Jianshui purple pottery with Yixing purple clay, and think that the clay painting of purple clay is actually very beautiful; when they compare Jianshui purple pottery with nixing pottery, they think that the carving of nixing pottery is also very beautiful. So naturally, it seems to be a little cumbersome and redundant.
Contrast can only form a very simple impression on new things, and easily ignore the nature of things.
Children’s nature is pure and innocent, curious and lively, but once one child is compared with another, there are “good children” and “bad children”. Other people’s “good children” will play, play, sing and play. They will get high marks in language, numbers and foreign languages. Therefore, we should transform our playful and active “wild children”. We must ask them to do their homework hard, get high marks, be obedient, quiet, polite to others, and have high EQ, just like “children of other families”.
It’s a child who knows nothing about the world! The so-called children are full of curiosity and curiosity about everything they see and love. Like children, everything has its own nature. In the world of flowers, plum blossoms are more wonderful in the world of flowers, but that is its nature. If Chimonanthus praecox doesn’t open in winter, but opens in midsummer, you will feel uncomfortable. You think it is not Chimonanthus praecox.
The same is true of purple pottery. Engraving and filling is one of its natures, which is the most significant and recognized form of existence. If one day purple pottery is abandoned because of “trouble” or the effect of engraving and filling is not as good as the original, it may not be far away from disappearing.
So it’s Purple pottery! To carve and fill in again is not to find something to do. It’s not to let calligraphy and painting not wear and tear down for a lifetime. It’s not deliberately creating mysteries and raising prices. It’s because that’s what it was when it came to the world. It’s made in Jianshui. It’s called Jianshui purple pottery. It should be like this.
